Joint Commission Approves New MS.01.01.01 Accreditation Standard
April 4, 2010 — After much debate and extensive field review, on March 18, 2010, The Joint Commission, which accredits health care organizations, announced the approval and adoption of revisions to the Medical Staff Standard MS.01.01.01. The revised Standard primarily addresses a medical staff’s relationship with and accountability to the hospital’s governing body. The Standard emphasizes greater collaboration to better achieve quality patient care. The Standard becomes effective March 31, 2011.
While The Joint Commission has provided a one-year compliance period, the Firm’s health care group (and specifically Joseph Bubba and Susan Royster) is actively involved in advising clients on the implications of the new Standard. The health care group has identified several potentially significant areas that require particular attention by hospitals and medical staffs. Notably, many, if not all, hospitals will need to create a conflict management mechanism to resolve conflicts which may arise between the medical staff and medical executive committee. Hospitals and other health care organizations accredited by The Joint Commission will need to carefully compare their current medical staff bylaws with the new Standard, and the extensiveness of the amendment process, will largely depend on the completeness of the entity’s current medical staff bylaws.
