Fitzpatrick Lentz & Bubba is pleased to announce that Maraleen D. Shields has been selected to receive a Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) President’s Award. Shields was chosen by outgoing PBA President, Sharon R. López, for her “dedication and commitment to the PBA Blue Ribbon Panel on Membership Engagement for Millennials, Minorities and Mothers.” Ms. Shields was presented the award on May 11, 2018 at the PBA Annual Meeting in Hershey, PA.

In addition to her work with the PBA Blue Ribbon Panel, Ms. Shields is a member of the PBA’s Minority Bar Committee and was recently named Chair of the Rising Star Program Subcommittee. Houston’s Rising Star Award recognizes and elevates outstanding achievements and accomplishments of members of the PBA Minority Bar Committee, and Ms. Shields will be revamping and elevating the program as part of her duties.

“Part of the Minority Bar Committee’s mission is to assure full and equal participation of minorities in the PBA, the legal profession, and the justice system in general. Promoting and elevating minority attorneys who are working to advance the rule of law and social justice in our society through bar and community work is essential to achieve that goal. The Rising Star program is a great way to promote and elevate these attorneys,” explains López. “We chose Maraleen to lead this work because she is committed to advancing this mission; she has shown us through her other volunteer work that she is a capable and prepared leader; and she is engaging and welcoming so we are confident attorneys will want to work with her.”

Ms. Shields is a member of FLB’s Healthcare and Litigation & Trial Practice Groups. Her healthcare practice focuses on peer review and credentialing matters, licensing and professional board disputes, Health Care Quality Improvement Act (HCQIA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and Health Information Technology and Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH) compliance, the OIG exclusion program, and risk mitigation and event management. Through her litigation work, Ms. Shields has handled a wide array of matters including, healthcare business disputes, municipal liability, class action litigation, personal injury matters, and general complex litigation.
